Three Walks, Three Different Experiences

Each route at Castletown offers its own character. Whether you're looking for a gentle stroll or something with a bit more elevation, there's a walk here that'll suit you.

The Main Avenue Walk

A straightforward walk along the formal avenue approach. It's flat, well-maintained, and takes about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace. Great views of the estate buildings halfway through.

Woodland Loop

Three-mile circular route through woodland and along the river. It's got more elevation changes, so it's not as easy as the avenue, but you'll see wildlife and peaceful sections most visitors miss.

The Meadow Walk

A shorter one-mile route perfect if you've got mobility considerations or just want something gentle. Benches are placed at scenic points — most walkers sit for a bit and enjoy the views here.

Getting Started

Plan Your Visit in Three Steps

We've made it simple to organize a walk that works for you.

01

Choose Your Route

Browse the walks available — from the gentle Meadow Walk to the more challenging Woodland Loop. Pick based on your pace and time available.

02

Check the Details

Review terrain, distance, estimated time, and facilities. We include benches, water access, and accessibility information for each route.

03

Walk and Enjoy

Head out at your own pace. The grounds are open year-round. Most visitors bring comfortable shoes, water, and a camera — you'll want photos of the views.

"We weren't sure we'd manage the full avenue walk, but it was perfect. Took us about an hour, wasn't rushed at all, and the views halfway through made us stop and just sit for a bit. We've been back three times since."

Why Walk Here

What Makes Castletown Different

Proper Surface Quality

Most of the main routes use well-maintained paths and gravel surfaces. The avenue walk is tarmac in sections. Not muddy after rain like some places — the grounds drainage is genuinely good.

Plenty of Seating

Benches are positioned at scenic spots. You're not walking for miles between sitting spots. The Meadow Walk especially has good bench placement if you need frequent breaks.

Accessible Facilities

Parking near the main entrance. Toilets available. Water fountains on some routes. The estate is genuinely set up for people who want a relaxed day out, not a fitness test.

Historic & Beautiful

You're not just walking in any park. The buildings, avenue layout, and river setting have genuine character. It's the kind of place that makes for good conversation on the way back to the car.

Questions

Frequently Asked About Visiting

Browse answers to common questions, or visit our full support guide for more details.

01

What's the best time of year to visit?

The grounds are open year-round and each season's got something different. Spring and autumn are probably most comfortable for walking — not too hot, not too cold. Summer's lovely but can get busy. Winter's quiet and the frost on the formal gardens is genuinely beautiful if you don't mind the cold.

02

Are the routes suitable for walkers with mobility aids?

The Meadow Walk is flat and short — best option if you're using a stick or frame. The Main Avenue is mostly flat but a bit longer. The Woodland Loop has elevation changes so isn't ideal if you've got significant mobility challenges. We've got benches throughout if you need regular breaks.

03

Is there parking available?

Yes. Parking is near the main entrance. It's free and there's disabled access parking if needed. From the car park, you're within a few minutes' walk of any of the routes starting points.

04

Can I bring a dog?

Dogs are allowed on leads throughout the grounds. There's a small designated off-lead area near the car park if you want to give them a run. Stick to the marked paths and you'll be fine.

05

What should I bring?

Comfortable shoes (the paths aren't rough but you'll be on your feet for a while). A jumper — it's often cooler in the trees than you'd expect. Water's a good idea. A camera definitely — the views are worth capturing. Sun cream in summer.

06

How do I get more detailed information?
